The measurement of cholesterol in serum: reference method.

چکیده
Measurement of cholesterol is sufficiently important in the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease so that a reference method should be available in the laboratory for evaluation of the rapid screening procedures in common use. With this in mind, a critical evaluation of the Abell procedure was carried out. The ex traction procedure, the effect of interfering substances, the effect of time and tempera ture, the effect of light, the saponification pro cedure, reproducibility, and the effect of varia tions in the preparation of the LiebermannBurchard reagent were critically examined. The accuracy and reproducibility of the method were confirmed, and it was consid ered to be a most suitable reference proce

Reference Values for Serum Lipid Profiles in Iranian Adults: A Spline-Based Quantile Regression Method
Background: Reference measurements are used to screen for abnormal blood lipids. The problem is that these reference values obtained in one population cannot be effective for another population. This study aimed to determine the reference values for blood lipids profiles in the population aged 25-64 years in Yazd. Methods: This descriptive study was based on the data of Yazd Health Study (YaHS...

Serum cholesterol is the third nationally recommended health screening test. It is the first test which depends upon the chemical analysis of a serum compound. Over the past 100 years, the methods of measurement and methods of standardizing these measurements have improved owing to the combined efforts of clinical research, governmental and non-governmental actions, and commercial producers. Th...
متن کاملReference Values for Serum Total Cholesterol Concentrations Using Percentile Regression Model: A Population Study in Mashhad
Background and Purpose: Serum total cholesterol (TC) concentrations are affected by several factors including ethnicity, diet, geographic, and environmental determinants, and are related to another disease, including hypothyroidism, and renal and liver disease. It is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, particularly if associated with high levels of serum low-density lip...
متن کاملA comparison of results for cholesterol in human serum obtained by the Reference Method and by the Definitive Method of the National Reference System for cholesterol.
Here we compare the Reference Method (I) and the Definitive Method (II) for measurement of cholesterol in serum. For pure cholesterol solutions, values by I agree with values by II, but for fresh, frozen, or lyophilized sera, values by I average 1.6% higher than values by II. We conclude that an undetected interference is associated with I. However, the observed difference does not diminish the...

متن کاملThe effect of wet cupping on serum lipid concentrations of clinically healthy young men: a randomized controlled trial
Objectives. Reduction in serum lipoproteins, especially LDL cholesterol, is a preventive approach against atherosclerosis. Bloodletting has been a recommended method to reduce serum lipoprotein concentrations. Present study was conducted to investigate the effects of wet cupping as a method of bloodletting on serum lipoproteins. In a randomized controlled trial, 47 men, 18-25 years old, without...
